Sumario: This paper focuses on the use of the concepts of concordia and libertas as religious elements polarizing the political struggle between optimates and populares in the first century B. C. As a point of departure, the Ciceronian discourses after his return from exile are considered, concretely in the context of the building by Clodius of a shrine to Libertas in the ground of Cicero’s house. Attention is paid to the main Republican episodes related to the building of a temple to Concordia (as those of Camillus in the 4rth. Century, or Opimius after C. Gracchus’ murder), as well as to the transitional period between Republic and Principate, when the opposition concordia vs. libertas as vehicules of the optimate and popular ideology was still well alive.
